The coldest temp was -21 degrees and for three days the temperature never reached 0 degrees. We fed the horses down in the little valley Elk Creek has carved in the landscape. The Beartooths, above, were formed by a huge granite batholith pushed up through the Earth's crust, while the Absarokas, below, are more volcanic. The Beartooth Plateau is lake country with great fishing, but the Absarokas offer better habitat for wildlife, like the Grizzly Bears featured in our previous newsletter. It is a favorite gathering place for grizzly bears, who dine on the moth larvae that is deposited in the scree fields. At the end of the summer of 2024, The family took another trip later in August to enjoy watching the bears as the ranchers had before them. There were approximately 30 bears spread out on the rock fields, but what caught our eye was the efforts of a mama bear to protect two cubs from a male. They struggle raising dust, fighting over the cave. She then goes toward her cubs (just above and to the left of her) and stands up escorting them toward the cave. The male bear apparently got the message and made his exit "stage right." We sadly demolished one of the two cabins, but we decided to move the other cabin up the hill through the bunkhouses to create a space to keep our supplies for backpacking. Homesteaders moved old cabins by pulling them with horses over logs laid out for the cabins to roll over. For years it protected the mill as ranchers produced much of the lumber for our ranch projects. The buffalo still "roam" and the antelope certainly "play." We are blessed with some wildlife sightings in the summer and many during the fall-winter-spring. Mountain sheep are among the most difficult to locate for large parts of the year as they stay in the highest reaches of the mountains. Cold and snow bring them down in the fall, and they show a surprising nonchalance about being sighted and watched. The early-rising or light- sleeping ranchers are often serenaded in the early morning hours as the coyotes start their days. One day the summer before last, one of our ranch rides went out along Steamboat Mountain harangued by a long, sustained chorus of coyote yelps and barks. The den that year was on Steamboat, and either the parents were warning us away or the youngsters were just having fun.
